Abstract Compassion focused therapy (CFT) is rooted in an evolutionary view of the human mind as formed a multitude contrasting, and often conflicting, motivations, emotions competencies. A core aim to help clients understand nature their way that de-pathologizing de-shaming. The approach also on cultivation compassion work with these difficult aspects mind. CFT includes ‘multiple-selves’ intervention which involves differentiation threat-based emotion exploration conflict. then applied client’s affective world aid regulation integration. This paper focuses clients’ experiences chairwork version multiple-selves, wherein personify separate chairs. Nine participants depression were interviewed directly following resulting data analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Three interconnecting themes identified: appreciating emotional complexity; role process; compassionate results highlight importance understanding internal multiplicity conflict depression, creating sense personal coherence. embodied enactive was found be benefit identifying separating emotion, developing new forms self-relating. discusses clinical implications such findings for treatment depression.
